History

An International Non-Governmental Organization first sees the light of day in 1990. But the essence and spirit of sharing and caring was fostered by Muhandiram Francis Amarasiriwardene Wickremasinghe a hundred years ago, an ancestor of the Chairperson, Mrs. Basnayake. He magnanimously donated and founded the school Sangamitta Vidyalaya, and gave his personal property to build on. 6000 students are enrolled in the school today; in what is the largest Buddhist school for girls in the south of Sri Lanka.

Other genealogical connections from the past establish the nobility and stature of this same family; such as with Mrs. Basnayake’s maternal grand-uncle William Alfred Goonetilleke being appointed as Attorney General of Siam by Royal decree.
Their philanthropy is well attested to here, with the Wickremasinghe Memorial Home for Elders in Kegalle……
Established in memory of Mrs. Basnayake’s grandparents, Albert and Agnes Wickremasinghe.

Her late husband, Dr. Arthur Basnayake was an academic and a diplomat with a distinguished career in the Ceylon Foreign Service who served in various countries and headed the Foreign Affairs dept., in Colombo in 1976. After his leaving government service and after Dr. Basnayake was inducted as Professor of International Relations at the Gaku-in University in Nagoya, Japan, he conceived of this International Non-Governmental Organization to assist and sponsor help to the most deserving of this world.
